Hey! My name is Anna and I am now a second-year apprentice in falconry, so by no means am I an expert in falconry. I just may know more than the average passerby.
My falconry story starts way back when I was about seven. My older brother, Braden, found falconry online and started telling me and another one of my brothers, Nate, about it. Braden lost interest and so did Nate, but the idea of hunting with a bird of prey and working so closely with such a beautiful, primative creature stuck with me. Us falconers call it "the bug". It's basically an addiction.
My entrance into the falconry world was far from perfect. This sport is immensely demanding of time, money, and mental effort, and I'm a high-school student with not much of any of those to spare. I didn't have my dad's support and I'm pretty sure I only had my mom's support because she didn't think I could actually do it. I won't get into the details because this page will be way too long, but got my license at 14 and worked with two american kestrels my first year as an apprentice (seperately, because as an apprentice I'm not allowed more than one bird on my license at a time). I'm now a second year apprentice working with a male American kestrel named Petrie for his second season and hoping for the chance to hunt with a cooper's hawk next season.
